A Roman Marble Head of Alexander The Great

Circa 1st Century A.D. – 2nd Century A.D.
Dimensions: H. 5 1/2 inches (14 cm.) (without base)
Ex. Bowman Collection, Northampton, MA. acquired in Europe, 1969.

One of the greatest generals and rulers in history, Alexander the Great was considered a demigod after his untimely death. His image was everywhere throughout Greek and Roman cultures. The Roman emperors even adopted him as an ideal and represented themselves in his guise. He is usually depicted with distinctive wavy hair, falling at his brow and the nape of his neck, as witnessed in our example. A fine head of exceptional quality.
