The SS Republic was side wheel steamship that sank in a hurricane in October 1865 off the coast of Georgia en route to New Orleans. In 2003 the wreck was located 100 miles off the coast of Savannah Georgia.

The SS Republic was carrying passengers and $400,000 in coins mostly in $10 and $20 gold pieces, intended for use as hard currency after the Civil War. In August 2003, the wreck of the Republic was discovered by Odyssey Marine Exploration Inc. in around 1700 feet of water.

A salvage effort recovered about a third of the rare 19th century gold and silver coins carried abroad and worth $75 million. Many of the 51000 silver coins and 14000 artifacts recovered are on display in selected museums in New Orleans, Detroit, Tampa, Elberta, Hot Springs, and Oklahoma City.
