A Roman Grayware Pottery Oil Lamp

ca. 3rd – 4th century A.D.
Measurements: 3 3/4 in. L. (9.5 cm.)
Condition: Intact, excellent overall condition.
Provenance: Acquired in Paris in 1996; American collection since 2008.

Olive oil was used as a fuel as well as sesame oil, fish oil, whale oil and beeswax. From the open dish, design changed to closed with a spout for a wick and from production on the pottery wheel to production in mould which gave better quality and enabled decoration of the lamps as our current example.
