An Egyptian Blue Faience Ushabti for the Chantress of Amun, Ankheniset

Third Intermediate Period Dynasty XXII-XXIII, circa 945 – 927 B.C.
An Egyptian blue glazed ushabti for the Chantress of Amun Ankh-En-Iset (She Lives for Iset).
Height 3 7/8 inches (8.7 cm.), without display stand, 4 3/4 inches (12 cm.), with display stand.

The purpose of Egyptian ushabtis was standardized during the Late New Kingdom (1300 – 664 B.C.). This ushabti served as as servant of its deceased owner in the afterlife to complete daily life chores needed.
Unlike this fine ushabti, ushabtis In the most humble tombs were made of terracotta or raw clay, covered with white. The figuerine is in the form of a mummy, wrapped in a shroud and standing upright with both feet together. The hands are crossed on the chest and hold a pair of hoes, tools needed for agricultural work, and seed sack painted in black. the facial features are carefully modeled and suggest the individual portrait of its owner. This statuette is intact and has a blue color, making it aesthetically appealing. The statuette is mold-made from faience, a typical Egyptian material. The blue color of this ushabti is due to the migration on the surface of the quartz and copper oxides contained in the paste. Fired at relatively low temperatures, about 800 – 900 C. These elements turn blue during the vitrification process.

The position of Chantress of Amun was a high-ranking and prestigious role in ancient Egypt. Women who held this title were members of the elite upper class, and their duties gave them social and religious prominence. .
