An Egyptian Blue Faience Ushabti for the Chantress of Amun, Ankheniset
Third Intermediate Period, Dynasty XXII–XXIII, circa 945–927 B.C.
Ex: Joseph Klein Collection, acquired between 1941–1980
✨ Historical Significance – This exquisite ushabti was created for a Chantress of Amun—a prestigious title reserved for elite women who served in the great temple of Karnak. Chantresses held both social and religious prominence, their voices believed to carry divine resonance in rituals honoring the god Amun. Ushabtis, funerary figurines placed in tombs, were intended to serve their owners in the afterlife, performing agricultural and household tasks so the deceased could enjoy eternal rest. Unlike the humble clay examples found in modest burials, this faience ushabti reflects the elevated status of its owner, embodying the artistry and devotion of Egypt’s Third Intermediate Period.
🔮 Physical Description – Measuring 3 7/8 inches (8.7 cm) without its stand and 4 3/4 inches (12 cm) with, this ushabti is formed in classic mummiform style: standing upright with arms crossed over the chest. The figure is rendered in blue-green faience, though the glaze shows areas of fading and surface wear consistent with age. Black-painted details remain visible, including facial features, a headband, and hieroglyphic inscriptions running vertically down the front, identifying the owner and invoking her role. The figure holds agricultural tools—hoes and a seed bag—painted in black, though these details are partially worn. Despite minor surface losses, the piece retains strong color and legible inscriptions, offering a vivid glimpse into Egyptian funerary traditions.
💎 Collector Appeal – This ushabti is not merely an artifact—it is a tangible connection to the spiritual life of ancient Egypt’s elite. Its fine craftsmanship, brilliant blue glaze, and association with a named Chantress of Amun make it a rare and desirable acquisition. For collectors of Egyptian antiquities, it represents an opportunity to own a sacred servant of the afterlife, imbued with the prestige of its original owner and the artistry of a civilization that continues to captivate the world.
