The portrait head of this somewhat idealized woman belongs to the Late Republican – Augustan era. It is certainly belongs to one of the elite women of that era. It has a distinctive hairstyle known as the nodus type, a variant of that type worn by Octavia the Younger, the elder sister of Emperor Augustus and wife of Mark Antony; and Empress Livia Drusilla, wife of Emperor Augustus. The hair style characterized by the roll of hair over the forehead, with the hair from the sides swept into a bun at the nape of the neck. Although most of her hair is covered, the bun is suggested with subtle bow of the veil in the back of her head. This style, popularized by Empress Livia and made fashionable during the Augustan era.
